Description

A plant that grows in or near water, but no deeper than 80 cm.

Closely related to Typha angustifolia, which has narrower leaves (0.5-1 cm). The leaves were used to make mats.

Flowers

The female flower, a sort of plume, is below the male flower and stays on till autumn. The male flower withers away quickly leaving the cigar-like looking appendage.

Leaves

Linear narrow blade leaf, like grass. Long, flat, erect, rolled slightly inwards, grey-green, to 2 cm wide and 20 cm long.

Fruits Seeds

Follicle: a dried up compartment of the ovary, opening on one side to release one seed.

Edible

Stems, leafbase and rhizomes: when bitter, discard.
