Pangasius prices increased sharply, what is the cause?

In recent days, the price of raw pangasius has exceeded 30,000 VND/kg. It is difficult for businesses to buy goods, while the sales volume of ponds is not much.

Currently, the price of raw pangasius at farming granaries in the Mekong Delta region such as An Giang, Dong Thap and Ho Chi Minh City. Can Tho... is increasing sharply from 28,000 VND/kg to 31,000 - 32,000 VND/kg.

According to fish farming households in An Giang province, this whole week, the price of pangasius has increased sharply, especially, businesses go to the pond to pay a deposit in advance to keep termites, helping farmers to be very excited. Currently, the price of pangasius farming has now increased to 29,000 - 30,000 VND / kg, with the price of fish increasing to 31,500 - 32,000 VND / kg, pangasius farmers have started to make a profit.

The reason for the high price of pangasius is that from the beginning of 2023, China loosened the control of the Covid-19 epidemic to restore production, business and trade activities with other countries and territories. .

Trade between Vietnam and China markets is favorable. The market promotes the purchase of pangasius in large quantities, leading to a situation of insufficient supply and demand. Meanwhile, the previous time, the price of fish food increased continuously, the selling price was below the break-even point, causing many people to reduce the scale of fish farming.

Some comments said that the price of commercial pangasius is currently at a high increase compared to the past 2 years. At this price, farmers are profitable. However, in fact, the percentage of farmers who are happy is less than 10% because at this time there are not many people who have fish to sell, because in the past time they had to hang up their ponds or "soak fish" due to prolonged loss. As in An Giang, the province currently has 1,628 hectares of water surface for pangasius farming.

“The price of pangasius increased, everyone was excited. However, the lowest production cost of pangasius is also 30,000 VND/kg, so selling must be above this price or the price of feed must be reduced in order for fish farmers to expect to make a profit,” said the pangasius farming household.

Talking to a reporter from the Industry and Trade Newspaper, Mr. Duong Nghia Quoc - Chairman of the Vietnam Pangasius Association said that the price goes up and down due to the rules of the market. And with a fish price of over 30,000 VND/kg, it is still not worthy of pangasius farmers.

One of the reasons that the price of pangasius has increased in recent days is because this is the wrong season. "The amount of commercial fish is less due to the small number of fingerlings, not the right season, so the output of pangasius is reduced, not the crop," said Mr. Duong Nghia Quoc.

Pangasius prices are on the rise sharply. Some forecasts are made that, by the end of February 2023, the price of fish will be at 33,000 VND/kg, in April 2023, the price may increase to 35,000 - 36,000 VND/kg.

Mr. Duong Nghia Quoc said that the price of pangasius has increased again, the introduction of pangasius farming and harvesting is also very fast, only about 6-8 months. Therefore, do not worry about shortage of pangasius supply in the near future.

Recently, 23 Vietnamese seafood enterprises were approved and announced by the General Administration of Customs of China to be eligible to export to this market. Thus, up to now, the CIFER system of the General Administration of Customs of China has more than 800 Vietnamese enterprises announced that they are eligible to export to the Chinese market.

Le Hang, communications director of the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), said that in the context of rising global inflation, China will be the most potential destination for Vietnamese seafood enterprises. South in 2023 thanks to explosive demand, close geographical location, lower logistics costs and risks than other markets. When China opens up, the demand for seafood will explode while the country's domestic raw materials will find it difficult to keep up.

In export items, Ms. Le Hang said, pangasius will be more profitable than shrimp because businesses have existing trade relations with Chinese partners, Vietnamese pangasius can fill the gap between white fish from the US and China. Russia in the context of political conflict has not yet come to an end.

On the other hand, recently, Chinese consumers tend to consume more pangasius and other freshwater fish than tilapia, which is also an opportunity for businesses to increase exports.

Besides the positive comments from this market, China's application of Orders 248 and 249 to Vietnam's seafood exports so far is still a point of many obstacles. As reflected by businesses, the procedure for registration and waiting for approval to issue a code of China Customs takes a long time, takes a lot of time to wait, affecting the plan and progress of production and business of the company. enterprise. Therefore, export businesses expect the authorities of the two countries to coordinate and support to speed up this process. At the same time, strengthen trade promotion to the Chinese market.
