Southern Black Widow spider (Latrodectus mactans)
Last one from this set. Here is a detail crop of her eyes. Most people don't even notice the eyes on this spider...either because they don't want to get too close or because it is difficult to pick out details on her shiny black body.
This spider has very poor eyesight and relies more on tactile sensation from her web.
A final warning again, look but do not touch.

Man, the angle is incredible. If done right this would make for an awesome movie poster!
That has to be the most scary close up of a spider I have seen, and I have seen a lot of them.
She's definitely beautiful, though I'm wondering is that a droplet of water or just a reflection off her eighth (Lower-right-right) eye? As well as the third (Upper-right)?
Really lovely shot though, you did a great job with this set, the details really stand out.

Those are not water droplets. that's just how the eyes are shaped.
Ah, okay, it just seemed like that since they appeared silver whereas her other eyes appeared to be more violet/purple, thanks for clearing that up, though.
That's a trick of the light caused by odd angled reflections from the flash. That kind of effect is not uncommon with these more poor sighted spiders.
The end of the lens is about 6 inches away from the spider. The lens itself is about another 5 inches long then the camera body. So, I've got about a foot of distance between me and the subject.
Widow spiders are not fast when off its web...and this one was particularly sluggish. They are not aggressive so I really wasn't in any danger here.

The first and last time I'll ever see a widow from that close. I had no idea the widow's legs were that hairy. Guess the shiny black body obscures that.
You'll also notice the tiny hairs on her body. The smooth appearance is deceptive, but betrayed when you get up close. :)
Lordy, this is an incredible photo <3 I may have a source for getting some of these but I'm quite obviously hesitant << but damn they're gorgeous and sleek.
Thanks :) I'd imagine you can find them around you if you look hard enough.
You still in Florida?

Nope, WV. My pets would all be illegal there, that's the only downfall of FL. I miss it so...
You should be able to find widows there. You're in the range for the Northern and Southern black widow I believe.
And possibly brown widows.

Hey, I say don't be! I've had em, and I know others who have, and they're no different from any other spider. Quite honestly, I found myself more relaxed with them than my Poecilotheria regalis, as the chance of a bite getting through the skin with a Latrodectus sp. is much less than with a big ole pokie. Besides that, they're pretty easy going so long as you don't handle em! :]
wow! this is so beautiful! widows are a little creepy, but along with venomous baddies like rattlesnakes, highly misunderstood. Thanks for a view i probably wouldn't see anywhere else!
Holy mother of pasta.
That is stunning, and I don't even particularly care for spiders. My first thought was, "That is a heluva camera." o.O
Wow. Just wow O.o

*reads up a bit further and gets that info* Scratch that question. :)
I tell you what is scary, though: getting stung on the leg by a scorpion while asleep in bed. :D Luckily it was a brown scorpion.
After a while it's not THAT bad lol :P *lies* lol
