Benicio Del Toro is well acquainted with the Cannes Film Festival. He received the award for Best Actor in 2008 for his portrayal of Che Guevara in the film of the same name by Steven Sondbergh, and joined the Palme d’Or jury two years later. So the 51-year-old actor was a natural choice to head the jury of the Un certain regard competition, which will take place May 8-19. This category, which was created by Gilles Jacob in 1978, aims to reward young, lesser-known filmmakers who produce bolder, more boundary-pushing cinema than the movies in the official selection.
