How can I use this scroll template in class?

Scroll writing is a super fun activity that lets children delve into the past. We've created these scroll writing paper templates as a guide for all of your scroll writing endeavours. Whether that be writing a new Magna Carta, a letter to a lost love, or a message in a bottle. Kids will love to get crafty in the classroom with these fun scroll templates.

Encourage your class to write independently in lessons using these scroll templates. The scroll templates can be used in your pirate-themed lessons as children can create their own messages in a bottle. Be sure to add more resources to your pirate themed lessons with our pirate resources for kindergarten.

Ask your students to write down something about themselves onto the scroll template, and then roll it back up, tie it with a rubber band or piece of string, and place it in a bottle.

A fun activity to get your class thinking creatively and using their imagination, and just one of many ways in which you can utilise this scroll template in your classroom.

More like this scroll template:

Scroll writing is a fantastic way to get children excited about practising their handwriting. The old-world feel of the coffee blackened design sends them right back in time to unknown worlds and fascinating times. When you can use your imagination in class, learning is much more fun!

This scroll template can be printed off with narrow lines, wide lines, half lined or with no lines at all. This is great for differentiation in the classroom, as the scroll templates can be used for all abilities.

To teach your students more about pirates, you may wish to also use this pirate differentiated reading comprehension.

We would also recommend that you take a look at these Message in a Bottle Writing Frames; another great tool to use in your pirate-themed lessons.

What are scroll templates?

Scroll templates are a useful resource that can be used in images, illustrations, or informative pieces of work such as posters, to add some creative flair.

Scroll templates help your children when completing themed writing, as they serve as a visual aid to get your students in the mindset of the theme.

These scroll templates would make a great addition to pirate-themed history lessons, lessons about medieval England, and lessons focused on the fantasy and adventure genres of literature.

Fancy getting a little crafty? Using these lovely designs as a template, you could help children make their own scrolls using a few magic ingredients - coffee and water.

How to make a vintage paper scroll:

  • Get a piece of blank paper
  • Smother it (or dip it) in a diluted coffee solution
  • Hang up to dry on the washing line or a piece of string with a peg
  • Rip off the edges and scuff it up a bit to make it look old

For extra authenticity, bury the completed scroll under some dry sand or dirt for a few minutes, and it will look like you've just found a buried treasure map!
