Dreghorn Castle (Dreghorn House)

  • Built / Designed For: Sir William Murray, Master of Works to King Charles II

House & Family History: During the early 20th century Dreghorn was used as a private school, after which it was acquired by the War Department. In the early 1950s the War Department found that the Castle was surplus to needs; because of poor maintenance, dry rot, and vandalism, they decided it would be too expensive to restore the Castle, so the decision was taken to demolish it. In April 1955 the 300th Parachute Squadron of the Royal Engineers arrived and used flame throwers to reduce the Castle to a shell. On May 1, 1955 the Royal Engineers returned with explosives and razed the Castle to the ground.
