A shrub with simple, grayish green leaves and attractive, reddish, tubular flowers in terminal clusters, followed by cherry-sized, golden yellow, heart-shaped fruits that are edible and sweet. It is native to the Andes mountains in northwestern Peru at elevations around 2800 m. In cultivation it is best suited to warm temperate climates.
