Identification & Behavior: ~63 cm (25 in). As its name indicates, the adult Scarlet Ibis is bright scarlet with black tips on the first four primary flight feathers; usually visible in flight. It has red legs and reddish-pink facial skin and beak. Juvenile birds are brown with reddish bill and legs. Birds acquire the scarlet color gradually. Adult birds are unmistakable.  Juvenile birds are similar to a juvenile White Ibis but their ranges do not overlap in Peru.

Status: The Scarlet Ibis has recently been documented on the Putumayo River, which is the border between the countries of Peru and Colombia. It also occurs in Co.

Name in Spanish: Corocoro Escarlata.

Sub-species: Scarlet Ibis (Eudocimus ruber), Linnaeus (1758).

Meaning of Name: Eudocimus: Gr. Eu=good, dokimos=excellent. ruber: L. ruber, rubra= red, ruddy.
