Army officer, killed at what became known as the "Dade Massacre" during the Second Seminole War. Having entered the Army in 1816, he had been promoted to brevet major in 1828. He was stationed at Fort Brooke on Tampa Bay in Florida in 1835, at a time of considerable unrest among the Seminole in the area. He was in command of a column of 110 soldiers and six officers sent to reinforce Fort King, near present-day Ocala. A band of 200 Seminoles ambushed the column, killing all but two soldiers. Initially buried at the site of the ambush, the men were reinterred at Saint Augustine National Cemetery under three pyramids constructed of native coquina stone in 1842. Dade County, Florida, now officially renamed Miami-Dade County, was named for him. (bio by: Garver Graver)
