What is Dice Water Snake Bite? (Definition/Background Information)

  • The dice water snake (Natrix tessellata) is a non-venomous snake that belongs to the largest snake family called Colubridae. The snake ranges in size from over 2.5 feet to 5 feet in length. It may be described as a semi-aquatic snake that spends most of its time near stagnant or flowing fresh waterbodies on overhanging tree branches, feeding mainly on fish and frogs
  • Dice water snake is distributed across large geographical regions including Europe, Russia, West Asia, and the Middle East, spanning several countries. It is found in altitudes up to 9,200 feet (2,800 m) in a wide range of habitats, including forests and mountains, but generally near a water source such as swamps, lakes, ponds, rivers, creeks, irrigation canals, and wet farmlands
  • It has a moderately slender body with a medium length tapering tail. Its flat head appears elongated with relatively large-sized eyes, and almost indistinct from its narrow neck; the snake has a narrowed snout. Dice water snakes are generally black, brown, or gray-green with dark spots; the underbelly is usually observed in bright yellow-orange color with black spots (resembling dice)
  • Human contact with this water snake is not uncommon. The snake has a mild disposition and if disturbed or provoked will either quickly jump into water, “play dead”, or release a foul-smelling secretion from its body. The snake is harmless and non-venomous to humans. Thus, Dice Water Snake Bites do not cause any envenomation and the bites are termed “dry bites”.
  • Rarely, there may be some minor effects at the bite site, including pain and swelling; although, no significant systemic symptoms are generally observed. A treatment of the condition may involve wound cleaning, steps to prevent secondary infections, and tetanus shots, as needed. Individuals with Dice Water Snake Bites have excellent prognoses; lethal bites are not reported
