Looking after your Philodendron

This stunning (Philodendron) is a fairly easy-going houseplant. The large, dark green/red glossy leaves will look good all year round and in the right spot will even produce striking red flowers.

Philodendron will do best in a bright spot but out of direct sunlight. A bathroom or kitchen is ideal where they will enjoy the extra humidity.

They are planted in quite porous soil as Philodendrons don’t like to be too wet. Bearing this in mind it’s best to allow the top of the soil to dry out completely on top in between waterings, especially in the winter. Philodendrons aren’t particularly greedy plants but the complimentary plant tonic can be added to the top of the pot in the Spring and this slow release feed will keep it going for at least 6 months.

As your plant grows it can be repotted in a larger pot. Usually it’s best to repot in spring or summer, choose a good quality free draining compost and a pot that is only a couple of inches bigger. In the right spot your Philodendron could get to six foot in a couple of years and produce dramatic red flowers. To restrict growth however, keep slightly cooler and darker and restrict pot size.

Problem solving: Drooping leaves can be a sign of either under or overwatering, lift the roots out of the pot to try and decide which or give us a call for more advice.

Warning: The leaves and stems of this plant are toxic if ingested so best kept out of reach of animals and small children.
