Germination

Germinating Iochroma edule Sweetheart seeds can be a rewarding process. Start by gently removing the seeds from the pods and lightly scarify them by rubbing them with fine-grit sandpaper or a small file to help water penetrate the seed coat. Next, prepare a well-draining seed-starting mix or use a blend of potting soil and sand. Sow the seeds on the surface of the mix and press them down gently without burying them too deep. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, and provide a warm, consistent temperature of around 70-75°F (21-24°C) for optimal germination. Sweetheart seeds usually sprout within a few weeks to a few months. Once the seedlings are large enough and sturdy, they can be transplanted into larger pots or directly into your garden, where they'll eventually mature into beautiful, flowering shrubs. Enjoy the tropical allure of Sweetheart in your garden, attracting pollinators and adding a touch of exotic beauty.
