Atikamekw Suns is based on the tragic true story of five young people from the Atikamekw First Nation community of Matawan, Quebec who were found dead in a truck in a river in 1977, and the apathy of the authorities investigating their deaths. The film chronicles the police force’s reluctance or inability to pinpoint whether this was a simple accident, or an act of racial hatred.

Atikamekw Suns currently has 236 views on Letterboxd, a criminally low number for a film of this quality and importance. With wider distribution and more exposure, I have no doubt it would make many best of the year lists. I want to use my (admittedly small) platform to promote the film for these reasons. If I get even one more person to check it out, it would be enough.
It’s impossible to watch this film and not think of Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon. Both films achieve similar goals with similar methods: using the police’s neglect on murders of Indigenous people to highlight their ongoing systemic oppression. Atikamekw Suns even has a non-fictional dimension, featuring footage and narration by family members…
One of the most intense and emotionnal screening i've ever been a part of. Based on the "accidental" death of five indigenous people, this film exposes how systemic racism denied a community of a police investigation surrounding the incident. Mixing fictions and interviews with its survivors Soleils Atikamekw shows a community that tries to heal from this tragedy and injustice. All in all one of the best film of the year for me.
Quand un crime est non-résolu, voire non-admis, fort difficile est la guérison. Les forces de l’ordre de notre province participent activement à des injustices -- des tragédies. L’histoire des Atikamekw de Manawan contée dans ce film n’en est qu’un exemple. En mélangeant du documentaire à de la fiction, Chloé Lériche accompli un travail sensible. Le deuil est présenté avec honnêteté et respect pour le peuple concerné par cette sordide histoire. De là, le racisme systémique s’y voit exposé. Le dispositif cinématographique contribue fortement à cela grâce à des mises-en-scènes soignées, symboliques et laissant place aux dialogues et aux réflexions… À un peu d’humanité.

Le 27 juin 1977, une fourgonnette a été retrouvée dans une rivière. Elle contenait cinq corps, ceux de deux hommes et trois femmes de la communauté atikamekw de Manawan : Julianna Quitich, Marie-Paule Nicole Petiquay, Thérèse Ottawa-Flamand, Denis Petiquay et Lionel Petiquay. Personne ne sait véritablement ce qui s’est passé durant la soirée fatidique du 26 juin 1977 qui a mené à ce drame. Certains témoins ont vu les cinq Autochtones faire la fête avec deux hommes blancs de Montréal avant d’embarquer dans leur camion en direction de Saint-Michel. Après, plus rien… Soleils Atikamekw est hanté par cette ellipse terrifiante et explore le vide insondable qui s’est créé dans la vie de cette communauté.

Initial fears of dry, melodramatic filmmaking are dispelled about 20 minutes in. Though I am not obsessed with how it presents the initial discovery of the murder, Atikamekw Suns excels after the fact.
The frame grants so much time and space to mourning, really delivering on the unbelievable absence that the central crime has created amongst the Atikamekw. At points, I grow scared that I am simply watching a documentation of the events with little commentary - bad things have happened, look upon them. But as the thought appears, narration from living witnesses to the mourning process pop up. Their voices are old, their questions are unanswered. But the film has been able (I really hope) to provide some elaboration…

Manawan, 1977. Un véhicule tombe dans une rivière près d’une communauté autochtone. Deux Québécois blancs s’en tirent, mais cinq Atikamekw perdent la vie. Si la police conclut à un accident, pour les familles des victimes, des questions demeurent sans réponse. Film choral, récit historique et poétique, Soleils Atikamekw est librement inspiré des rêves, impressions et souvenirs des proches des victimes. Réalité et fiction se rejoignent alors dans un film bouleversant sur le deuil, l’injustice et la mémoire.

Soleils Atikamekw is a proudly poetic docudrama about the unsolved and suspicious deaths of five Atikamekw folk in 1977.
Weaving together the memories and moods of those who survived the devastating loss in their close knit community and acted by relatives and people within Manawan, Chloé Leriche’s devastating tone poem reveals the systemic racism in Canada which is often overlooked.
Canada has a long history of treating Native people as disposable. From the Indian Act which formed the basis of South African apartheid, to the residential school program which not only enforced assimilation but also sterilised young women, to the ongoing resource theft and unfair treatment in so-called community spaces such as hospitals.

on est allé rencontrer la communauté de Manawan avec mon groupe du cégep, et voir certains lieux qu'on a vu dans ce film et surtout des enfants qui ressemblent tant à ceux qui ont joué avec nous au soccer là-bas est troublant
J'espère que Scorsese aura l'occasion de voir le film. (Pour être moins cringe et pour comprendre qu'on n'a pas besoin que les personnages parlent 75 % du temps)
Un film d'une grande justesse, des acteurs qui transperce l'écran (non-professionnelle pour la plupart, on sent leur lien avec le drame.) Une direction photo sensible, magnifique. On pardonne facilement les quelques longueurs dans la seconde parti. Allez voir ça quand ça sera en salle, s'il vous plait.
